Power supply is unreliable in Nigeria and when available most times fluctuation may occur and can lead to loss of appliances; thus it is essential to have a voltage stabilizer voltage stabilizer on ground. A voltage stabilizer is an electrical appliance used to feed constant voltage current to electrical gadgets and protects them from damage due to voltage fluctuations. As the name suggest, stabilizes the voltage; if the supply voltage fluctuates, a voltage stabilizer brings it to the desired range. Voltage fluctuations can damage appliances thus reducing their normal useful life.

How it works
The voltage stabilizer works on the standard of a transformer, where the input current is connected to primary windings and output is received from secondary windings. If there is a drop in the incoming voltage, it sets off the electromagnetic relays which add to more number of turns in the secondary winding; this gives a higher voltage which compensates for loss in output voltage.

When there is rise in the incoming voltage, the reverse happens, and, thus, the voltage at the output side remains almost unchanged. It does not give a constant voltage output, but operates the system in a safe voltage range.

When voltage reduces, electric current in appliance increase; this can cause burning of appliance.

Before getting a stabilizer, it is important to note down the power/watts for the appliance(s) that will be connected to the stabilizer.
